Envelope Design

An investigation into the design of an envelope system for a part 3 residential building, per the OBC 2012. The construction of the wall assembly is required to have a minimum RSI Value of 4.1, with 2.3 continuous. In order to achieve these values, 76mm of continuous rigid insulation was installed on the exterior of the framing, coupled with 100mm of spray foam insulation in the steel stud wall cavity. Utilizing cement fibreboard panels as a cladding system, a vented airspace allows for drainage while protecting the wall assembly behind it. Polystyrene extruded insulation, along with Tyvek air barrier protect against vapour penetration, while the vapour barrier is run along the interior side of the metal studs to ensure a vapour seal. A thermal break at the balcony, composed of prefabricated rigid insulation panels entwined with rebar allows for minimal bridging while maintaining structural integrity.

Alexander Calder Museum

Assigned with the task of designing a museum in the Distillery District of Toronto for artist Alexander Calder. Calder is primarily recognized for his mobiles and large monuments, utilizing metal as a medium and primary colours for his colour scheme. The resultant design focuses on the balance and equilibrium that Calder displays in his mobiles. The museum aims to incorporate a balanced plan through efficient circulation and programmable space. The theme of balance is enhanced by the floor plate of the museum which is sectioned into multiple levels of varying size and elevations. Each section contains a different program, creating distinct separation between spaces. the floor plate is inset from the exterior walls, allowing for ground floor to roof curtain wall. This inset furthers the representation of Calder's mobiles since it gives the appearance as though the floor plates are hung from the ceiling. The curtain wall is comprised of glazed curtain wall and insulated metal panel sections, which are arranged as orthographic representations of Calder's monumental sculptures.

Private Residence Addition

While working at McCallum Sather Architects, I was responsible for modelling and construction drawings for an addition to a house in Port Abino, Ontario. Using digital modelling as an investigative tool, multiple iterations were created to determine the final design. From here, I developed working drawings, reporting to a Principle at McCallum Sather Architects, coordinating with structural engineers and truss designers in order to achieve the intended design. Project completion: Spring 2015

Studio Away

The project brief was to design a master plan and a studio located off of the French River in Ontario, to be used by the architecture faculty for weekly trips during fair weather months. Dirt road access allows for vehicles to reach the summit of the hill to allow or easy transportation of supplies and students. The sleeping quarters step down the hillside as users travel towards the waterfront and studio. Located at the base of rapids, ambient noise from flowing water and wind brushing through the trees creates a vastly different experience for the user than the downtown Toronto campus. In order to create an adaptive space to meet the variety of needs of the program, services were located in an enclosed portion to the north, while the remainder of the building can be customized with the use of a modular panel systems which travels along a track based on the grid. This allows for a multitude of spaces to be created to suit the needs of the users at that moment.

Hamilton Condominium

During a work term with McCallum Sather Architects, I was involved in a feasibility and schematic design of a mid-rise condominium to be located in the downtown of Hamilton. Through a combination of modelling and spatial layouts the design was realized. Reporting to a Principle at McCallum Sather Architects, the feasibility study progressed on to schematic design. Attending client meetings, I made modifications to the plans and model according to design changes determined between the principle and client. Project is currently in the design development phase.

Tidal Reaction

Tidal Reaction was designed for a structural steel competition, with a design focus on span. The resultant design is a staircase which is located in the Bay of Fundy. A combination of hinged stair sets and landings allows for the pivoting of stair treads, which when rising rotate into a platform, and then rotate back to stairs as the tide levels lower. The combinations of landings and stairs is integral in not only the safety of the design, but also they all act in unison to ensure the proper formation of the stairs during the tidal period through the use of hinges and roller tracks. The structural stability stems upward from the lowest level, with each piece above resting on the previous.

Writer's Studio

Tasked with designing a studio for an author on the public site of Spadina Museum in Toronto, Ontario, the resultant design is situated in a row of the orchard. Given that the site is public, the building is sunken below grade and uses slit windows to effectively create privacy for the resident author while still allowing for views to the exteriors and ample daylight to penetrate the building. An overhead door to the south pivots into an overhang when opened, allowing for the author to expand his work space during fair weather months.
